Berlin | Not long ago, Germany appeared to be lurching towards a deep recession. Industry was cutting production and investment and consumers were tightening their belts to pay for soaring energy costs.
More recently, however, the mood has lightened. With gas storage facilities full for the winter and a raft of government plans aimed at shielding households and businesses from soaring energy bills, a full-blown crisis appears to have been averted.
Analysts are now talking of a recession “light” and even a possible end-of-year stock rally, as they revise up their 2023 growth projections for the country.
