Most of the discussion above is based on centralised solutions, ie, big wind and solar farms, big batteries. But the biggest change of the last decade or two has been distributed generation. People are using their own roof space to provide enough power for their own needs. At the moment, most do not have batteries, so are dependent on the grid for night-time power and for stabilisation.
This will change. Batteries are more commonly being installed in homes and businesses, and those sites become net contributors to the grid, or even independent of the grid.
Someone commented that it would require 450 times the footprint of a power station to provide the same energy as a power station. But under a distributed model, the roof is already there., doing double duty. No extra space is required.
