I can't say that I'm particularly surprised. My experience with Tesla products has been... less than sterling. I ended up selling my Model 3 at a significant loss because their general attitude did not give me confidence that they would support the car once the warranty was up. (I'm now driving a Camry hybrid, and waiting to see how VW and Hyundai look when they get EVs out here that will meet my needs.)

What surprised me the most was the line, "There were further contributory factors with the Megapack in question being switched into an off-line service mode, resulting in the protection systems being inactive." (My emphasis.) That on its own has alarm bells ringing in my head, although I'll grant that I don't know enough of the finer details to be too harsh. It would not surprise me to learn that Tesla has failed to consider several failure modes in their pack designs (note: I'm not saying that this is the case - only that it would not surprise me if it turned out that it is.)

Don't misunderstand me, lithium has its place in a grid; but for large scale energy storage (rather than short, sharp bursts of power to fill in gaps), it's nowhere near the best option.
