Had a chat to RFX today (see link to post above).
Re design (my thoughts only following the discussion)….. The bigger tank/more electrolyte approach would increase power storage (kWhrs) very cheaply … but not power (kW). More surface area on electrodes + scaled up pumps, wiring, etc would be required for more power from a cell if similarly fast discharge/recharge was required. From my discussion today it’s clear they’ve put a lot of effort into their evaluation re size (not just staying at 10KWhrs because that was the initial entry with a Tesla equivalent as I’d unfairly assumed). Time will tell if the approach succeeds. I’m still concerned that the approach is trying to be a solution for too greater scope of problems … but also understand that they just couldn’t afford to walk away from mobile towers to create a product optimised to the grid … and that they’re too small for multiple cell sizes.
Also, new knowledge that there’s a bit of R&D materials in their “consumables” and that “consumables” includes all Phillipines manufacturing labour means I need to rethink about how quickly they could feasibility close that marginal loss on each cell they sell.
Cheers
