Galp targets 10 billion barrel prospect in debut Namibian exploration campaign

Galp Energia is set, within weeks, to spud a high-profile exploration probe offshore Namibia, targeting an enormous prospect called Mopane that may house up to 10 billion barrels of oil in place. After TotalEnergies and Shell hit big oil with their Orange basin drilling campaigns, Galp will be just the third company to try its hand at making major discovery in this new global exploration hot spot.

The semi-submersible rig Hercules is currently on its way to Namibia to drill and, if necessary, test at least two wells for Galp.

There had been suggestions in the market that Shell’s unsuccessful Cullinan-1X probe, targeting a high-risk carbonate structure that extended north into Galp’s acreage, may have had a negative impact on the Portuguese’ player’s drilling campaign.But this appears not to be the case, according to Victoria Sibeya, Namcor’s head of upstream exploration, who said Galp is targeting a different play.Responding to an Upstream question at AEW, she said the operator is chasing “Upper Cretaceous plays …that have already been proven in (Shell’s) Graff-1X discovery.”

In a statement, Shino, said: “The ministry is excited to test these additional plays in the basin together with … Custos and Namcor. We are confident that the joint venture will have a safe, efficient and successful drilling campaign.”
