Chevron joins Namibian hydrocarbon hunt with epic drilling campaign"Chevron is preparing the ground to drill up to 10 exploration and appraisal wells in a highly promising block in Namibia’s exciting Orange basin, directly north of TotalEnergies’ multibillion-barrel Venus discovery.
The block has been covered by some 2400 kilometres of legacy 2D seismic data — shot in 2012 and 2018 — which Chevron licensed from Spectrum. In addition, this year, the supermajor completed a $30 million, 5400 square kilometre 3D seismic shoot covering the entire block.
The US major could start a drilling campaign as early as October 2024, according to a 242-page draft scoping report that is now out for public comment as part of the Namibian environmental and social impact assessment process.
There is no guarantee this number of wells will be drilled, but the scale of the proposed campaign gives an indication of the promise of a block that was highly sought-after during the farm-out process. According to Welligence Energy Analytics, the outcome of the Mangetti-1X exploration well that TotalEnergies is currently drilling in the northern part of Block 2913B “will be of interest to Chevron”. Mangetti has been mapped as a Lower Cretaceous objective.
According to the scoping report, the continental slope runs into the eastern part of Block 2813B, while the geomorphology in other parts of the acreage includes a submarine canyon as well as flat and hilly sections of the abyssal plain."
