Make what you will of the GALP release on the very positive second Cretaceous zone light oil and gas discovery at Mopane-1X, but what I can read from the most recent announcement is that GALP appear to have cracked the significance of 3D Amplitude Versus Offset (AVO) anomalies and correlation with the presence of light oil and gas.
As a retired petroleum geologist and geophysicist, I would speculate that "AVO-2" refers to the Amplitude Versus Offset seismic anomaly associated with the just drilled light oil and gas bearing mid-lower Cretaceous turbidite sands. Logically, you would expect that the initial upper Cretaceous turbidite light oil and gas filled sands would have an associated Amplitude Versus Offset seismic anomaly, "AVO-1". Other wise there would be no need to refer to an "AVO-2" in the announcement above.
With regards to the forthcoming Mopane-2X well, should there be similar Amplitude Versus Offset seismic anomalies as observed in Mopane-1X, associated with the target Cretaceous turbidite sands in Mopane-2X, I would speculate that the probability of discovering light oil and gas would appear favourable.
I would further speculate as to the areal extent of the Mopane Prospect, that Mopane-1X and Mopane-2X well locations are sited on crestal structures on the greater Mopane Prospect.
Note that not every Amplitude Versus Offset seismic anomaly is necessarily indicative of the presence of hydrocarbons or if hydrocarbons are present, a 'significant' hydrocarbon discovery- e.g Nara-1.
So we await the future drilling results of the Cretaceous turbidite sands in Mopane-2X to see if GALP can use AVO seismic anomalies to predict the presence of hydrocarbons in the prospects mapped in PEL 83.
And as they say in the oil exploration business "the rotary lie detector will reveal all" when these prospects are drilled in the future.
The proposed Drill Stem Testing or more correctly 'Cased hole production testing' at Mopane-1X will obviously provide a more conclusive indication of the possible commercial 'significance' of the reported Mopane-1X light oil and gas Cretaceous discoveries. Data such as reservoir quality will provide further calibration of the significance of AVO seismic anomalies as a predictive tool for the presence of light oil and gas.
The above comments are purely speculative and solely based on public announcements provided by the Operator and its joint venture partners.
