Norwegian deepwater driller thrilled about prospects in Namibia

"Norwegian deepwater driller Odfjell Drilling is looking to capitalise on its position in the hot-spot of Namibia where it sees rising demand from existing and new oil and gas company clients, as well as opportunities in neighbouring South Africa. The semisubs Deepsea Mira and Deepsea Bollsta drilled for Total Energies and Shell, respectively, offshore Namibia during the fourth quarter of 2023, while the semisub Hercules worked for Galp Energia in Namibia. All three rigs are managed by Odfjell on behalf of the rig owners.

Kjetil Gjersdal, chief executive, said in a quarterly results call on Thursday there have “been some fantastic discoveries made in that region” and Odfjell was receiving new inquiries from oil and gas company customers including “new clients who are looking for rigs in that region”. “There's more new clients that are going to start operations down there. And I think it's very much a region that is sort of in continuous development. We’re yet to see sort of longer-term commitments being made, but we like what we see there, and we see clients that are very interesting in continuing operating down there.”

Gjersdal also highlighted that harsh-environment semisubs like the three currently in operation in Namibia are the ideal drilling unit for that region. “It’s clear to us that bigger high-spec semisubs have definitely proven their worth for full-year operations down there. We saw this during the winter season where we were able to work through harsh-weather conditions while the drillship had to halt operations. So we think big semis like we have is very well-suited down there. And you know it's also interesting when you see given the proximity to South Africa and the need for semisubs in that area, it gives the operators a good tool to have units like this which they can have a flexible operation philosophy around. So we'd be very confident in semisubs in Namibia and the future for them there.”
