I have suspected that there are potential discoveries down there, but they have been held up to now by the corrupt, stupid incompetent ANC government. With the election due in a few weeks, the ANC have suddenly released a lot of oil exploration logjam, and Total seem to have been the main beneficiary.
Apart from this drill approval, I believe a production right for Total down deep south off mossel bay may have been signed off.
One wonders what Total has offered in return - perhaps some post-election black-token posts for the ANC pig-trough gobblers who are about to lose their gravy-train positions in the government
