I was talking to a fellow who was his mothers only child.
He moved in with her to care for her.
She became too fragile and had to go to a nursing home.
Because he was living in her house, it became a protected asset, so he cld keep living there.
Had he not been there, the govt would have used it to fund her care.
I am not sure what happens when she dies, whether the givt want compensation from her estate for the care in the home.
It almost seems, you are better off going into care owning nothing..
One thing to be mindful of. If you and you other half get diagnosed with dementia, if you dont have one of your kids or someone as power of attorney , the govt appoints estate trustees who take control of your assets,.
Keep control in the family.
