AVO = Amplitude versus Offset means that the seismic amplitude changes with offset (angle) between seismic source (airgun) and seismic receiver (hydrophone), caused by lithology or fluid. Because this phenomenon is based on the relationship between the reflection coefficient and the angle of incidence it can explain the presence of hydrocarbon in reservoirs and the thickness, porosity, density, velocity, lithology and fluid content of the reservoir. One of the main factors for AVO is the seismic response to fluid saturation within the reservoir (water-bearing or gas-bearing or high gas-oil ratio light oil.



Yep, this is a fairly difficult concept to grasp for most of us, so I hope the pictures below, and using Venus as an analogue, help explain the deposition setting of Venus and Saturn with seismic and AVO anomalies. Some of this I have posted before.




The picture below, sourced from Impact Oil and Gas (link attached), shows the Venus depositional interpretation along with AVO anomalies in red. I have interpreted where the Saturn superfan sits in this depositional setting. Remember, the primary objective of the Moosehead-1 well, were carbonate build-ups.

The picture below, tries to show PEL-87 and the superfan complex together with PCL's map on the right. Note the red funnel shape of the fan complex.


The picture below, is a 2D seismic line through the Saturn fan complex with some interpreted colour fill. Note the comments on the quality of the source rock encountered in Moosehead-1 and interpreted to underly the Saturn superfan complex.
