"Permeability appears to be an issue in this part of the Orange basin and was a key reason behind Shell’s recent decision to take a write-down on its discoveries next door to Venus. TotalEnergies, Shell and QatarEnergy have data sharing agreements, which saw Pouyanne reveal how Venus “clearly… has better petrophysical characteristics” than Shell’s nearby Jonker discovery. While Venus’ permeability of 2 to 4 mD “is not very high,” he said it is far better than Jonker’s which stands at about 0.7 mD. Pouyanne also highlighted another reservoir parameter — oil-in-place density — which can be useful in determining commerciality. Here, the figure for Venus is between 10 million and 20 million barrels of oil per square kilometre, compared to about 4 million barrels for Jonker. He also highlighted that the gas-oil-ratio at Venus is lower than at Jonker — 500 cubic feet per barrel compared to 700 cubic feet per barrel."
