Locally, Orange River-derived gravel deposits overlie Cretaceous mudstones which are of Orange River origin. Researchers concluded that during the Cretaceous more than 90% of sediments discharged from the Orange River to the Atlantic, were mud. The interpretation that the Orange River is a dirty river most-probably refers to the volume of mud being carried in suspension.
