BW Energy firms up plans for Namibia drilling campaign"BW Energy has filed environmental documents to secure approval to drill as many as four appraisal wells on its Kudu gas field offshore Namibia. The Oslo-listed operator said recently that the first well, Kharas, is due to spud in the third-quarter of 2025, with the exact date to be pinpointed once the company has contracted a rig.
BW Energy aims to boost Kudu’s resources, which currently stand at a marginal 1.3 trillion cubic feet, although this year could see approval of a development plan — subsea wells tied back to a floating production unit that would strip out liquids, leaving gas to be piped to a floating power barge moored in Elizabeth Bay, south of Luderitz.
A draft environmental social and impact assessment (ESIA) published this week by SLR outlined plans to drill four up to four appraisal wells — a number mentioned previously by the operator — at Kudu in Block 2814A. Public comments on the draft ESIA must be submitted by 14 March 2025, with public meetings to be held in Luderitz on 18 February and in Walvis Bay the following day. While BW Energy has only discussed the Kharas probe so far, the company had previously suggested another well could be drilled in an initial campaign.
The draft ESIA assumes two wells could be drilled in the first year and two wells in the second year. The 628-page document also states that the wells would be drilled to a depth of about 4900 metres in water depths of 150 to 750 metres. Kharas is being drilled in 640 metres of water. In ballpark numbers, each well is expected to take about 70 days to drill, with a further 15 days to test."
