An old saying that many old crocs might know is that the best discoveries are "geological accidents" ........ oops I was not expecting that result!! Too bad about all that fine science. I would rather be lucky than "right" (with the science).
Sounds like Mopane was one of those geological accidents where they were right and were greatly surprised. One of the exciting things about the oil business is how quickly things may change and wealth created..
Galp would have thrown the book and more at Mopane seismic data.
Before yesterday's talk I was a bit troubled about how so many different Mopane AVO geobodies related to each other. From what I saw yesterday two of them did not overlie eachother but were offset and slightly different ages. They are not always vertically stacked at one location where some vertically stacked pay has been reported.
In retrospect, the regional seismic expression of the Kudu Shale (oil source) stands out so clearly and its a bit of a surprise that it took so long for the industry to get lucky after so many years with occasional drilling (PCL included at Cormorant-1) and get after it in a big way. As V10 states the basin is obviously supercharged with oil (eg the North Sea) and there will be many successful plays in the long term.
The government statements about terms copied this week to this website may be of interest to a farmee but seemed to be a bit of poli hot air. The government needs to make sure that it does not kill the golden goose. It will be interesting to see how the Namibian industry matures and utilises the large volumes of associated gas -> LNG? or export electrons or molecules to the South African power grid. The S African sector of the basin looks like it will have gas in abundance too and I believe that there may be some drilling forthcoming there too. LNG will take years to get underway and you want to make sure you get paid if you export to S Africa where the electricity system has had serious issues in recent years. The two national economies have close connections. Interesting to follow developments.
