As with Maslow's fundamental primacy of physiological needs for any human (food, shelter, water), sovereign risk reigns for mining investment. Although I now have only modest holdings in WAF, I wish I had traded all out the moment I heard of the current coup.
Why? Because no amount of strategic mine development, effective executive management, honest performance reporting to shareholders, operational efficiency, honouring host country free carry and tax obligations, comprehensive opportunity and fair reward for local workers, and sound corporate social responsibility to the immediate community, as WAF has consistently done, can ever combat political mischief. Whether it is disguised as 'revolutionary spirt', 'righting colonial wrongs', 'power to the people', 'new national identity', 'enforcing security', or any other power slogans. Scratch the surface and you will find either tribal vendetta, masculine prerogative, self- or clique- aggrandisement, or policy incompetence. Not always, but often a 'symbol' of grievance is foreign wealth, real or perceived; resident or extracted. Resources companies or interests in oil or minerals become primary targets. What follows is a direct or at best masked change of rules defined as 'national sovereign rights' over such assets.
The Minister's speech at the UN confirms all of the above....and perhaps explains the 7.1% drop in SP
