New Lymphedema detection device at Surgical Associates, S.C.

WAUSAU, Wis. (WAOW) -- Surgical Associates, S.C. in Wausau is now using a new Lymphedema detection technology. It's called SOZO.

Lymphedema results in an often painful buildup of fluid in a persons arms and legs.

Some cancer patients develop this condition after their lymph nodes are removed.

SOZO can detect the condition early on.

It sends a low-level electrical current through the body to do so. The test takes about 30 seconds.

Dr. Cecilia Stroede, MD demonstrated how the SOZO works Friday. Within moments, results were available on a nearby tablet.

She says the new device is more accurate than what they've used in the past.

"For patients that have gotten that warning, change," said Stroede. "And we've been able to get them seen and treated in a very expedited fashion. They really appreciate this because they know that they're going to be able to avoid developing signs and symptoms of chronic lymphedema."

Surgical Associates, S.C. reports they are the first location in the state that uses the new SOZO device.

Lymphedema affects one in every three breast cancer survivors.
