The company has said that, whether the uniform is made from standard 50/50 NyCo, this 57/43 IHWCU NyCo fabric, or indeed any ratio of NyCo, it’s immaterial, because AJX can FR any ratio of NyCo.

The IHWCU is an alternative to the ACU which soldiers are allowed to wear as they see fit in hot climates and even in garrison. It has the same OCP camouflage print and is the same price as the ACU but offers the following advantages over the ACU

• reduced uniform weight
• faster drying rate and better air flow
• reinforced elbow and knee areas, helping to prevent ripping
• knee areas better tailored to allow for movement
• crotch gusset tailored for more freedom of movement in the trousers, also preventing drag and keeping the pants in a better position, especially when loaded down or wet.

Col. Stephen Thomas, project manager, soldier protection and individual equipment at Program Executive Office recalled that in past years, the Army had the standard Battle Dress Uniform, which was too heavy in hot climates. So, similarly the Army produced an optional “lightweight” summer BDU, but it quickly became the standard uniform most soldiers wore for comfort.

“What ended up happening is it became a uniform of choice,” Thomas said. “I think this will have the same results.”

If the Army proceeds with treating all ACU with FR, then all IHWCU, an optional swap for the ACU, would need to be treated as well.
