That scenario that you describe has only occurred once that I know of, and that was with a company called Nearmap that was run by a guy called Peter James. The share price was well over $3 for a long time and then it disappointed the market and dropped to about $1.20, then as it began to recover, management got a nice payday when they sold the company for $2.10 leaving many shareholders with deep losses despite the takeover.
Did you ever hear what happened to that guy Peter James? Of course, with his excellent record of looking after shareholders he managed to find a new gig, Chairman of another ASX listed company no less. Oh, and you might have heard of that company. It's called Droneshield.
