"the whole idea of putting someone on ignore is a bit childish" – it can be, especially if used as frequently prescribed here. Telling a person you're going to ignore them is also a childish and infantile way of giving yourself the last word. Everybody else is going to see the reply even if you don't!
But I've found that people use the forum for many different purposes:
- Commentary on stock price movements that everybody can see for themselves if they want to.
- Conspiracy theories about deep, dark forces arrayed against (or for) an industry or stock.
- Seeking validation and support for their own views, perhaps because they lack confidence or haven't done sufficient research.
- Expressing emotional reactions to share price movements, typified by references to canines, bags, walls, wiping (of lines), manipulation, and bots.
- Expressing emotional aspirations to share price prospects, typified by references to trains (crashing or leaving stations), rockets, ships (sinking or leaving harbours), springs, and rubber bands.
- Technical analysis of past share price movements explaining why that thing that just happened happened and why they should have been able to anticipate it because of some arbitrary "set-up" drawn on a graph, when in fact it happened because people doing fundamental analysis saw an important change in the business.
- Rational discussion and analysis of important announcements.
- Careful and well-reasoned discussion of a business' activities, strategies, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.
None of these purposes is wrong in any fundamental sense, but... some of these purposes are going to irritate, distract or bore people who are here for other purposes.
Therefore it makes sense to quietly ignore people who are using the forum for a purpose that interferes with the way you want to use it. In return I hope that those who find my posts interfere with their enjoyment of the forum should ignore me.
