We used to pay board, 1/4 to 1/3 of wages was the going rate.
A lot left school early to help out, many returned to ‘night school’ as it was affectionately known!
So in a small way that helped the family pay off the mortgage.
The Greeks and Italians had their family pay off the family home, then they all pitched in to pay off the eldest child’s home and so on.
