You might find that you void your manufacturers warranty if you dont use genuine ink cartridges, so if it is a new printer, might be better to use original cartridges, if your warranty is finished, roll the dice and take your chances I guess...
I presume that the manufacturers have some way to determine if you have been using genuine ink cartridges, but I dont really know that for a fact...
