Just a bit of information that many don't know, the Orginal Uighurs were NOT from Xinjiang.
Their ancestral home is located in present day Mongola and Russia.
Their ancestors; just like the Mongol army, had invaded and settled in the Xinjiang region.
The original peoples in the region (Xinjiang) were the Iranian - ie. present day Tajiks and the Chinese; not the Uighurs.
In any case, over the millennium, there has been countless warfare and conquest in the region.
In present day Xinjiang: there are over 40 ethnic minorities living there. And within the Autonomous Region of Xinjiang, there are autonomous perfectures - ie. independent areas of control: for the Hui, the Kazakhs, the Mongols, the Kyrgyzs and of course, the Uighurs.
Xinjiang is a now a melting pot of many cultures, religion and minorities.
The ONLY reason why Xinjiang is an issue now, is because of the BELT and ROAD INITIATIVE (BRI).

Its very easy to book a flight to Xinjiang - there are No restrictions of travel within the region; only heightened security of course (for the obvious reasons).
