State Government-owned electricity retailer Synergy is hunting for a new boss after revealing chief executive David Fyfe will leave in April.
He joined the business as general manager commercial in late 2020 and has been at the helm since 2022.
It’s understood Mr Fyfe has a new role lined up but the details have not yet been made public.
In a statement quietly posted to its website, Synergy said deputy chief Kurt Baker will act in the top job while the utility’s board searches for a new leader.
Mr Fyfe has led the business in a time of major change through the green energy transition.
The revamp was kicked off in 2022 when the State Government promised to close all its coal-fired power stations by the end of the decade.
Synergy’s shake up has gathered pace in recent months.
The business is investing in two new wind farms — King Rocks and Warradarge Stage 2 — that are set for construction this year.
A new battery at Kwinana has also been in commissioning while another is under construction at Collie.
Mr Fyfe is also a director of Ability WA and chair of the Fiona Wood Foundation.
He also has a remarkable story of survival, having stood just metres away from a bomb detonated in Paddy’s Bar during the 2002 Bali Bombings.
Mr Fyfe told The West Australian two decades later that “it was never in (his) DNA to give up”.
“One of the things that’s enabled me to get through is that I accepted everything that happened very quickly, I didn’t fight the, ‘Why has it happened?’,” Mr Fyfe said.
“I remember thinking, ‘It is what it is’ and my whole attitude was getting back to normality as quickly as I could.”
Synergy board Chair Michelle Shepherd said Mr Fyfe had “reshaped the organisation” to deliver a pipeline of green power projects.
“He has left the organisation well positioned for the future,” she said.
Synergy is the State’s biggest power generator and also has a legislated monopoly selling electricity to households and small businesses.
