I think that the real players ie. banksters,big business,senior bureaucrats and politicians are simply using those young and naive with an idealistic impulse just begging to be used for a "higher purpose". Just because someone doesn't think they are religious doesn't mean they aren't, and the green movement is full of them. Same as the socialist movements over the past century, full of "useful idiots" as Lenin called them.
The push for geoengineering is to take up the financial slack of the carbon market debacle. It's akin to digging holes in the ground and filling them back up again er, well, it is exactly that lol.
As the Poms and Europeans have found out, the bill for green rhetoric is paid by the poor, not the rich. The ich are the milkers, not the milkees...
