Sorry to chime, I always love a good metallurgy thread.
Nearer the surface presents a much larger chance of leaching (or weathering). Usually meaning a much lower grade. It's very common especially if the area has been mined previously. Means they have to move that much more earth before they get to the good stuff.
I hold AVZ, and one of my fav things about it, is there is very little weathering on the shallow pegmatite (I think from about 2-5m) which is very uncommon for a resource that close to the surface.
