Mathematics is characterised by the fact that it has Proofs, together with Conjectures and Theorems, which are all potentially provable or disprovable.

Other scientific fields of study are characterised by the fact that any theories put forward are only disprovable, never provable. That is why in fields such as Big Physics, involving the search for the Higgs boson say, it can never be proven that the Higgs exists or has been found, just that they are 99.999?% certain (the defacto 'burden of proof').

Therefore, the fact that any scientific theory can only be disproven requires that the scientists involved be sceptical. 97% of Climastrologist exhibit a distinct lack of scepticism and I have yet to see any 99.999% statistical correlation in AGW science!
