I don't think the real world of politics work that way. Often times, chats between leaders are just chats, the technical details are left to the experts on both sides to work on.
World leaders talk to each other all the time; they will continue to talk to Rudd as the head of the Australian government.
And, leaks do happen, so long as they are not of a sensitive security nature. Bush supposedly not knowing what G20 was only embarrassed Bush the person.
