There are different methods of extracting helium... a recently commissioned (2010) helium production facility in Australia is based on direct helium separation from natural gas using cryogenic separation. The helium plant at the Darwin LNG production facility comprise of a 3 % crude helium feed from an NRU (downstream of main cryogenic heat exchangers). The plant is capable of producing 2.6 ton per day of liquid helium (860 liter per hour) with a purity of 99.999 %. This process utilises a two-stage cryogenic flash process, hydrogen oxidation reactor and two PSA units.
