Bottom Hole Temperature at Irwin is ~ 150 degC which is the bare minimum temperature needed for most commercial geothermal projects (most are much hotter). Data from Irwin won't give a lot of support and more useful data would have been collected at West Erregulla where the wells are deeper and hotter. Although the Geothermal permit covers a large area, the area with highest potential will be in the deeper/hotter part of the basin.
Looking at Geoscience Australia's heatflow map, I'm surprised they're not looking closer at the Cooper Basin.
There's a good simple explanation of geothermal by the Australian Academy of Science here: https://www.science.org.au/curious/technology-future/feeling-heat-geothermal-energy
