    This technology is viable and isn't exactly new.
    There are some trial plants operating and I believe BHP are looking to use it at the Olympic Dam mine.
    Try Googling "Hot Rocks" ...should tell you all about it.

    Also is similar the Geothermal stream used here in NZ, the difference is that the NZ stuff is a lot closer to the earths crust that the granite suff 5 km down.
