Pushing the nuclear button could cost Howard the election imo. It is one thing to convince Australians that nuclear power has enough benefits to allow uranium mining and export, but quite a different matter to force them to live next door to a reactor. Even the nuclear industry isn't that keen on forcing the issue. They realise that Australia can contribute a lot of the supply but not much demand for uranium on a global basis.
I think a lot of people within the government are wise to this and Turnbull in particular has been a supporter of geothermal. I would expect him to announce something to counter or outdo the Labor policy in the near future.
