"Citizen protests against geothermal energy are considered a "project risk" by the state government"
Lively citizens' initiatives in Graben-Neudorf and in many other places, also skeptical local councils, for example in the district of Rastatt or in the Ortenaukreis, are causing protest and resistance wherever geothermal companies are planning projects on the Upper Rhine. This does not leave the state government and especially the Ministry of the Environment unimpressed. Although the state government sees "high potential" in so-called "deep geothermal energy," especially along the Upper Rhine or in Upper Swabia, it points to considerable resistance ("a project risk") among the population in view of concerns about noise, earthquakes, structural damage, pollution of drinking water and loss of property value.
