Most private cars are stationary for 90% of their life . So that provides them with the opportunity to be charged at home , at work , while your shopping etc . Massive opportunity to spread the charging load .
Every house has the capacity to charge a car . Sure it means that a charging point need be installed but that's no big deal . Over 1.5 million houses have solar panel installations in Australia . Home battery storage is increasing quickly as well . Getting charging points put in is no big thing . I'm sure large commercial car parks will seize the opportunity to provide charging as an extra income stream .
It turns out the batteries and solar panels are proving to way more resilient than expected . Car battery packs are lasting more than 8 years and then are finding a second life as home storage . Many of the companies that are producing these products are including recycling in their design ( including Tesla ) . Solar panels orginally had warrantees of only a few years . Now we are seeing them regularly last past 20 years . Imagine how much better a new solar panel is than one designed and built 20 years ago ?
Off peak power might be used initially but it will be the daily solar generation that will pick up the slack in time . As renewables continue to get cheaper and more widespread they will have to sell power very cheaply or store it themselves . Either way it is likely we will ultimately have surplus and therefore very cheap power .
Considering how good batteries are now and applying the the improvement rates that we have seen to solar panels over their development it is very likely that in 5 to 10 years battery storage will be very cheap and it will be normal to run your house and charge your car off your home power station .
