I would agree that there is investment in energy infrastructure that is required . But , that is already happening due to the inclusion of renewable energy and home storage anyway . The amount required for the personal ev it is not that great .
Almost all residences have the capacity to charge an electric car . It would require the addition of the charging point but that's about it .
The problem of stopping everyone charging their cars at once and overloading the grid has already been solved .
Smart chargers are available that monitor grid conditions and can be controlled by distribution companies . They can also monitor the input from your solar panels and only charge your car when you have excess power at your property if that's your preference .
Charging systems are ultimately configureable so for the vast majority of personal transport charging will be a non issue .
Then there's the fact that all these cars that are plugged in will be able to export power to where it is needed . If anything it will compliment the intermittence of renewables .
Most personal vehicles are idle 90% of the time . That means that they have the potential to be a massive distributed power station .
We are all familiar with cueing at the service station . That is because we have to manually fill cars and we can't do it at home . That's why servos have massive peak demand problems . A huge amount of those servo customers at peak times are commuters as opposed to distance travellers so they don't really need to be there at that moment .
So imagine a circumstance where the majority if cars are full or almost full all of the time because they are plugged in most of the time .
Nuclear . It's missed it's opportunity . Too expensive . Takes too long to build . Location issues . Waste issues .
Unless they can come come up with a new type of reactor that produces no waste , can be built quicky and for reasonable cost I think it's chance of a baseload power role in Australia is over .
Here's a video about a study of evs impact on the grid in NZ . While NZ and Australia are vastly different power wise , it does provide some interesting information .
