This is a complex issue. The German government is desperate to appease the Greens. This cancellation of nuclear generation is Merkel's olive branch to the Greens but as mentioned in previous posts, the action is hypocritical.

Germany will still generate its electricity from nuclear plants - the difference is that those plants will be in neighbouring countries and not on German soil.

A very shortsighted and dangerous plan. Global warming is about to hit with a vengeance and fossil fuel generation will virtually cease overnight. What then for Germany. Renewables will not do the job and their nuclear neighbours will find they need all their nuclear generating capacity to supply their own needs.

Germany will then have to belatedly restart their own nuclear plants or sustain massive and prolonged power outages.

This policy is politically motivated for short term gain. The ruling party needs to appease the Greens but Germans have no intention of phasing out Nuclear generation in the longer term. Within 5 years the Greens will will be begging for nuclear generation as championed by their poster boy James Lovelock. In 5 years fossil fuels will be public enemy number one.
