Germany is the last country who would want to leave the EU. If they left and reinstated the Deutschemark, their exports would suffer tremendously as the Mark would soar in value, thus making their products very expensive. It is in Germany's interest to stay in the EU.

I think I read someone else's point which to me sounded very good. It basically said that Germany's wish for the PIIGS to get their economies in shape through austerity measures has been granted. We've all seen the riots etc on the streets which clearly show there is real austerity in these countries. Given Germany has got the austerity measures it wanted to see, they should then soften their stance on money printing.

The other point that was made was that in reality, Greece should leave the EU and go back to the Drachma, and they are allowed to do whatever they want. However, Germany would then throw the entire German kitchen sink at the other PIIGS to make sure the EU stayed in tact.

It's going to be interesting times ahead!
