The irony of Merkel's nuclear knee-jerk is that by shutting down the nuke plants, Germany which used to have an excess of electricity and used to make money from selling it to neighbouring countries, now have to import electricity and pay a demand induced premium for it.
But the true irony is that the countries neighbouring Germany that have excess electricity to sell to Germany are the nuclear using countries of France and the Chezch Republic. So now Merkel is over-paying for electricity from foreign nuclear power stations that due to the geography of Europe are just as close to Germans and are non-German regulated nuclear stations which don't have to comply to German industrial law.
