Couldnt agree more Fumbles,I went to a myers store in Perth had my hands full of mens clothes,I was heading to a checkout counter to buy them, the staff saw me and the wife coming and they did a runner.
What really grates with me is the " can I help you" line, which immediately invokes the "just looking line".
What about, how are you doing.
I remember watching an "old salesman" in a specialist fishing gear shop espell the virtues of a particular trout fishing rod,he was,
1)interested in the product he was selling,
2)completely across the product he was selling,
3)compelling presentation, answering all questions with a polite sir at the end.
4)he actually ended upselling to the customer because of the shopping experience.
Unfortunately retail people arent aware of the the difference between service and servitude.
