    in terms of having sufficient number of players in an industry to provide market competition, I think a problem we in Australia face is our small domestic market and our large physical size which make economy of scale (important for low unit cost) difficult and it has become even more difficult when we embrace globalization.

    I don't think as yet we have an answer or answers on how to deal with that.

    If you look at our major industries, such as retail, we essentially have 2 or 3 big players with some minnows competing at the fringes. In theory, there can be competition even if we have or 2 major players in an industry, but in practice it does not happen often enough.

    Our ACCC does not have enough power or resources to monitor anti-competitive behaviour, in my opinion.
