Having been forced to pull out of the Rio Tinto bid, BHP boss Marius Kloppers will no doubt be fishing around for another deal.
More importantly, given tight credit markets, Royal Dutch Shell would probably welcome the deal.
A merger between BHP Petroleum and Woodside would be compelling as they have parallel exploration strategies in several areas, including West Africa and the Gulf of Mexico.
