The child in the photograph is not tied up at all....the child is hunched over in the blazing african sun and is close to death....the bird in the background is a vulture which is patiently waiting for time to take it's course and deliver it it's next meal.
The photo won a Pulitzer prize for photography, and was taken under the strict conditions governing the awards that the image captured is not influenced by the photographer in any way.
Before HC shrunk made it's changes to images posted, it was far clearer and easier to understand the reality of the situation.
I first used that image in the lead up to Christmas as a reminder to all of us here, who more often than not are so absorbed in our own personal interests, that there is a world out there, poor starving children and alike, that need our help, and many of us here are well in a position to make a difference.
There was a running debate over this photo on the AGS thread a few weeks ago.....below is an old post of mine in response to some of the comments which explains the matter a little more.....thank you for asking Nevawake.

Sorry that I haven't responded to your post earlier as I've been away.....and to all other posters I apologise for the comments, which I'm about to make, clogging the AGS thread.
Chris, you asked if I could remove the image that appears on my post, and said that your intention was not to offend with that request, and certainly I wasn't by it. One of the comments you made was....
"It is not prone to good impressions about the world we live in. Although the only impression we get is negative."
Nightstalker then followed with the comment.....

And his assessment of my intentions was and is completely accurate. Madmacs replied to Nightstalker's post with....

Yes Madmacs, inequities are a given, but it is a given that has been going on for eons, and yet the world continues to stand by and watch....I could think of nothing better than moving on to solutions, but as long as the vast majority continue to stick their collective heads in the sand, the solutions, which have presented themselves in many and varied forms for just as long as the problems have existed, will continue to be overlooked, bypassed, ignored....so, presentation of the problem must continue, until we can no longer overlook, bypass, and ignore.
And in an often busy and all-consuming lifestyle that the 21st century entails, it certainly does no harm to remind people of the issues that we should all reflect upon....the story that the image in my post tells is certainly one we should all ponder, and then, more importantly, act upon.
It wasn't much of a decision for me to make use of that image in my posts....I didn't even know how to incorporate images into posts when I first came across it, but I immediately sought to find out. After reading Bendo's post, I glad I did. He wrote.....
"I saw that photo and the story it told me reduced me to tears. We all sit on our ar$e every day making shiploads on the market yet most of us will not donate a bean. Pay it forward people. Each of us could help 3 people and in turn they could help 3 people and that would be the greatest pyramid scheme I can think of. Apprentice you prompted us to sponsor a child but now I think why stop there why not sponsor 2 or 3 or 4."
These few words are why I will continue to use this image. Many of us here who invest in the stockmarket have vastly increased our personal wealth in recent times, particularly those who have invested in AGS as I have. Many of us have the means to make a difference....albeit small....But imagine if we all did?! And I've found that through all my life so far, giving is a gift which tends to reward far more than the gift given in the first place....it always seems to perpetuate and come back ten-fold in one way or another.
Finally, I would ask those who find the image shocking or disturbing to ask themselves why that is so, and is there anything that they could do to address that....the EASY solution would be to put me on ignore or to ignore me, and you would never have to see that image again....but nothing good ever came easy did it??
