Errr... That is exactly the strategy with some of those promos aren't they? Make zilch or even loss lead on a few products to rein in the fish hoping they will bite on some other products while in store. Sure, some savvy bargain hunters may not buy enough to make up for it, but the majority probably will and result in a net gain. At least that is the strategy. Even my local grocer does this with some fruit and veg advertised at cost price which is really a loss given the overheads but most customers will also buy other stuff too to more than compensate for the bait.
