getting started again

I dont mind admiting but I got burnt a bit during the tech boom of the 90's and have stayed out of the market since then.

I intend to re-enter the market and looking at purchasing Degrey (DEG) and Silvania (SLV).

Are these considered to reasonable stocks to purchase as a starting point. I will not be throwing huge dollars at them but will be starting at around $3-5k each.
