Guys - could someone please explain this to me.

I very rarely chase a div - I buy for long term growth. I have bought some SSM (6000) for the div, and I bought it at 33.5 a week ago.
Now what happened the last time I bought a share for the div (only to appease my accountant) was some years ago - I cannot remember the share name. What happened however is that I bought the share before the ex-div date but failed to receive the Div. I wrote to the sponser broker of the company enquiring as to why I hadn't received the div and was told that they require something like 10 days to register the holding and therefore I wasn't entitled (this I think was the company registered holding not being the Chess registered holding). I took it to be perhaps related to the fact I held no prior shares in the company but to this day still don't understand the process and haven't chased a div until now. However I will be holding past ex-div date as is my nature.

Was I doing crack at the time? or can someone explain this scenario to me???
    Cheers
