Seems from todays news photos that the plume has changed colour slightly since yesterday - a "whiter" colour compared to the "brown" mist previously.
Since the attempt to light the discharge has failed - that suggests to me that the plume would not contain a large percentage of Methane or other HC gases.
More likely to be a combination of OIl & Water? (ouch) - this would be very difficult (if not impossible) to ignite.
Presumeably, Mantle etc will quickly resolve what to do next - if there is little gas and the likelyhood of a dangerous fire/explosion is diminished - they should be able to procedd with a "mechanical" capping solution.
The rush to lawyers seems typical of the US approach does it not?
