The writers of flood stories probably drew on flood events after the ice age, oral story telling, using them as morality tales, Adam and Eve, etc, 'this is what the gods or God do when we misbehave.' Disobedience, social control, yet the ancients did not have our understanding of the planet and likely took these stories literally.
