The mining tax alone is not an election decider. For most voters there are many other issues with a higher priority and head of the list is climate change.

As Labor is likely to be returned to office with or without a mining tax agreement and with the Greens likely to win the balance of power in the Senate then there may be no chance to negotiate anything after the election.

An agreement now on this proposed tax is the only safe option available to the mining companies.
