JULIA Gillard has declared she is prepared to legislate to lift the representation of women on company boards as a last resort if corporate Australia is unable to address the dominance of men at board level.
But the Prime Minister has also said she believes the nation's companies want to lift female board representation without the need for compulsion.
Ms Gillard made the comments early today after joining US first lady Michelle Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to celebrate international women's day in Washington.
Speaking to reporters later, Ms Gillard defended Governor-General Quentin Bryce's calls for more women on boards, saying Ms Bryce had spent her life fighting for gender equity.
"The government's policy is that we have a quota or a target for government boards at 40 per cent, which we are working our way towards," Ms Gillard said.
"We are strenuously urging the private sector to act to get more women on to their boards. I view regulating as the last option."
