What a pair Gillard & Gaddafi - GG?

LIBERAL MP Sophie Mirabella has likened Julia Gillard to murderous Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi over her "deluded" position on climate change.

It's the second time in two days a Liberal frontbencher has made the Gaddafi comparison in attacking Labor opponents.

Ms Mirabella warned that the Prime Minister's carbon plan would turn Australia into an industrial graveyard.

"If Ms Gillard believes Australians want to pay higher electricity and higher petrol prices, she is deluded as Colonel 'my people love me' Gaddafi," Ms Mirabella said as she entered parliament this morning.

"Delusional leaders exist all over the world including Australia. And if the Prime Minister believes that struggling Australian families and Australian manufacturing is hanging out to pay more with a carbon tax, she is delusional."

Ms Mirabella repeated her accusation in a press release titled "Gillard's Gaddafi-like delusion", in which she warned domestic manufacturers would not be able to compete with cheaper imports under the carbon tax.

Yesterday, Liberal health spokesman Peter Dutton likened Trade Minister Craig Emerson to the embattled dictator who has turned the guns on his own people to retain his tenuous grip on power.

Her comments were in contrast to those of some Coalition MPs who called for calm in the increasingly vitriolic debate over the carbon tax and in light of a death threat to independent MP Tony Windsor.

Nationals MP Darren Chester called on everyone to take a "cold shower in terms of their reaction to the whole debate".

And fellow Nationals MP Mark Coulton said he was not aware of any debate or issue that benefited from a "vitriolic campaign".

"I can't see the point in that," he said.

Other Coalition MPs arriving at Parliament House carrying grocery items this morning to make their point about the proposed carbon tax.

Liberal frontbencher Kevin Andrews arrived with a loaf of bread and asked: "How much more will this loaf of bread cost under their plans to tax carbon dioxide in Australia?"

"How much more will it cost to bread on the table of an evening? That's a simple question and it deserves and answer from Julia Gillard and Bob Brown."

Meanwhile, Opposition environment spokesman Greg Hunt denied reports today that the cost of the Coalition's direct action plan would blow-out by billions of dollars.

"Our material is fully costed. It's very clear and simple to achieve what we are proposing," he said. According to government-commissioned analysis, the Coalition's carbon plan would do nothing to halt carbon emissions while creating a $20 billion budget black hole.
